Are Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products Really Safe for Pets?
What "eco-friendly" actually means on a label, which ingredients still harm dogs and cats, and how professional cleaners protect pets on the job.

"Eco-friendly" is one of the least regulated words in Canadian cleaning. Some green-labelled products are genuinely safer for pets; others contain essential oils that are outright toxic to cats. Here's how to read a label properly — and how our team handles pet homes.
What "eco-friendly" legally means (spoiler: not much)
In Canada, terms like "green", "natural", and "eco-friendly" have no binding definition. Look instead for third-party certifications: EcoLogo, Green Seal, or EWG Verified. Those actually audit ingredient lists.
Ingredients toxic to pets even in "natural" products
- Tea tree oil — toxic to cats and dogs even in small amounts.
- Pine oil / phenols — dangerous for cats specifically.
- Citrus oils (d-limonene) — irritant, especially for cats.
- Wintergreen / methyl salicylate — highly toxic if ingested.
- Undiluted vinegar — safe but can irritate paws on freshly mopped floors.
Ingredients that are genuinely pet-safe
Baking soda, castile soap (unscented), hydrogen peroxide (diluted), enzyme cleaners (for accidents), and pH-neutral floor cleaners rinsed with clean water.
How we handle pet homes
We swap to unscented, EWG-verified products; keep pets in a closed room during mopping; and rinse floors with plain water on a second pass. Any surface a pet touches (feeding area, bedding zone) is cleaned with pet-specific enzyme cleaner.
Tell your cleaner
Every reputable cleaning company will adjust for pets — but only if you ask. When you book with N8R residential cleaning, add "pets in home" in the notes and specify any allergies or sensitivities.
Frequently asked questions
Do you charge extra for pet-safe cleaning?
No. Pet-safe eco products are our default across all residential visits.
What if my pet has cleaning-product allergies?
Tell us in the booking notes and we'll switch to fragrance-free, dye-free hospital-grade options.
Can pets be home during the clean?
Yes — most are. We just close them in one room during mopping so paws stay dry.
