Steam vs Dry vs Encapsulation: Which Carpet Cleaning Method Wins?
Every carpet-cleaning method has trade-offs. Here's when steam extraction beats dry cleaning, when encapsulation is enough, and what actually removes pet stains.

Three carpet-cleaning methods dominate the Canadian market — and marketing hides which one is actually right for your situation. Here's an honest breakdown.
Hot water extraction ("steam cleaning")
Best for: deep clean, pet stains, allergen removal, most residential carpets. Water at 200°F+ is injected under pressure and extracted with 90%+ of soil. Drawback: 6–12 hour dry time. Manufacturer-recommended by nearly every major carpet brand.Encapsulation
Best for: light commercial traffic, offices, quick turnaround. A polymer detergent surrounds soil particles and traps them; a follow-up vacuum removes them. Drawback: not a true deep clean — leaves ~30% of embedded soil.Dry compound
Best for: wool, silk, and delicate rugs that shouldn't get wet. Absorbent compound is brushed in and vacuumed. Drawback: limited stain removal, more visible fibre disturbance.Which method removes pet urine
Only hot water extraction paired with an enzyme pre-treatment. Encapsulation and dry compound will mask the smell temporarily — the urine crystals are still there and will bloom again on humid days.
How often to clean carpet
Residential: every 12–18 months, or 6 months with pets/kids. Commercial: quarterly encapsulation + annual extraction. Our carpet cleaning service defaults to hot water extraction unless the carpet material requires otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
How long until I can walk on the carpet?
Sock feet after 2 hours; shoes and furniture after 6–12 hours. Air movers cut that in half.
Will steam cleaning shrink my carpet?
No — modern extraction machines don't over-saturate. Old-school shampooing was the culprit.
Do you move furniture?
Light furniture yes (couches, chairs). We work around heavy pieces (beds, bookcases) unless disassembled beforehand.
